Solano Land Trust joins in health effort

Solano Land Trust helps parents, community leaders, and teachers get kids moving outside by providing special events and ongoing monthly events throughout the year. Last month marked the one-year anniversary of First Lady Michelle Obama's "Let's Move!" campaign, which aims to raise a healthier generation of kids by providing them with healthy food and getting them physically active. The statistics on childhood obesity are sobering. According to the Let's Move campaign, nearly one in three children today is overweight or obese, and according to the Children and Weight Coalition of Solano County (CWCSC), Solano County has a higher rate of overweight children than the California rate. Solano Land Trust believes it is part of the solution. Solano Land Trust provides special events and ongoing monthly events throughout the year including:

  • Fly a Kite at the Lynch Canyon Kite Festival on Saturday, April 23. Bring your kids. Bring your kites. Bring a picnic. Leave your canine family members at home and don't forget to bring water and sunscreen, say organizers. The event is free but there's a $5 parking fee.
  • Run or walk at the Lynch Canyon Trail Run & Community Hike on Saturday, June 4. Register for the half marathon or 10K if you're a runner, or bring your kids for the free 2.5-mile community hike. Registration is required for the run (but not the hike) at www.lynchcanyontrailrun.com
  • Take a hike at Lynch Canyon and Rush Ranch on your own during open hours, or join a docent-led hike at Lynch Canyon, Rush Ranch, or the King-Swett Ranches.
  • Explore wildflowers and invertebrates at Jepson Prairie's vernal pools in spring, or attend the monthly "Get the Rush" events at Rush Ranch. For more information on events, go to www.solanolandtrust.org. Learn more about the Let's Move campaign at www.letsmove.gov.
